About Us
"Hidden in the heart of things, thou art nourishing seeds into sprouts, buds into blossoms and ripening flowers into fruitfulness" - Wrote the great Indian Poet Rabindranath Tagore. Tirupattur is a small but growing town, nearly a 100 km south of Vellore. Once a part of Salem District, it was then annexed to North Arcot District in 1928, which is now known as Vellore District. On 4th July 1950, the Mary Immaculate Teacher Training Institute came into existence with Sr. Mary Vaz as the Headmistress and 24 students to begin with.
In October 1959, as per the request of the Government, the Training Institute changed its physiognomy as "Basic Training Institute", which brought within a change in the teaching materials, and inclusion of manual work, cooking, gardening and weaving. In 1972, the Basic Training Institute was reformed as Secondary Grade Training Institute. During the period, the content material for the course was under experimentation. In 1981, the course was transformed as Diploma in Teacher Education (DTE). Subjects like psychology, Educational Administration were introduced and the course duration was extended to two years. In 1984, the Management felt the need to shift the training institute and merge it with "Mazzarello Home" Community. Sr. Yettukuri Margaret with Sr. Barbon Jabamani catered to the 74 trainees.
From 1990 onwards the new syllabus was introduced and the Government Examination was conducted at the end of the both years. In September 1993, the Training Institute was brought under the National Council Teacher Education (NCTE). Till then it was under the Inspectors of Girls School. According to the norms laid down by the NCTE, a new building had to be constructed with a well-furnished library and laboratories for science, psychology and computers. The staff qualifications were also upgraded to collegiate level.

The Education Programme for the Trainees now comprises of a two months course on computer, social awareness programs at least thrice a year, guide captain training for 7 days, daily asana, catechetical seminar for 2 days, seminar on media education to love for 2 days, seminar on media education and leadership training.

The Institute works in collaboration with other schools for teaching practice and observation of lessons in Garden School, Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Dominic Savio Elementary School and Higher Secondary School, Aringnar Anna Middle School, TMS Elementary School, Panchayat Union Middle School, Mary Immaculate Elementary and Higher Secondary School, Government High School-Vakkanampatti, and Government Girls High School-Madavaram.
Through peer group associations, the trainees acquire an integral formation and participate activity in reach out programs, in the nearby villages called Madapalli Panchayat, Liturgical animations, cultural programs and a variety of activities throughout the year.
Formation to social awareness is given through reading newspaper and viewing Television. They are also exposed to the social needs, the first years through coaching classes to the poor children of our schools, and the second years through adult and non-formal education in the nearby villages. In this way, the management and staff are ever vigilant to form these young women into best teachers with integral formation, who will in turn promote, "Education for a social change".

We gratefully remember our venerable pioneers who toiled in many ways to realize this institute for young women of Vellore District. We also remember the superiors, principals, sisters, teachers and the non-teaching staff who contributed for the growth of this institute during this 56 years. May God Bless each one of them. We wish that this, "Mary Immaculate Teacher Training Institute" may grow more and more to spread Education far and wide.
